The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons is a professional organization of the top national and international specialists in the field of shoulder and elbow surgery. Founded in the 1980s, the mission of this organization was to bring together the top minds in the field to advance and share knowledge, improve surgical techniques and organize research to foster future generations of experts. Historically, this has been a small, invitation-only group or recognized leaders in the field who have contributed both professionally and academically to the group’s mission. Admission to the society is a stringent peer-reviewed process that requires sponsorship by existing members. In 2018, Dr. Parsons was offered associate membership which consists largely of a trial membership that must be supported by continued contributions through meeting attendance, publications, community education and research. This past year, Parsons was invited to apply for active membership which is a recognition of his ongoing accomplishments in the field. This membership was granted in July 2021 with the sponsorship of Frederick A. Matsen MD (Professor and Emeritus Chairman of the University of Washington Department of Orthopedics) and Joseph D. Zuckerman MD (Professor and Chairman of the Langone Medical Center, New York University Department of Orthopedics). Dr. Parsons was a former shoulder and elbow fellow under Dr. Matsen and has performed ongoing technology development and research with Dr. Zuckerman. This work has led to the development of the Exactech Equinoxe Guided Personalized Surgery navigation system. This is the only system on the market that allows real time navigation of implant placement during anatomic and reverse shoulder replacement. It has been used in over 10,000 cases around the world and was developed in collaboration with Blue Ortho of Grenoble France.
