The Knee Hip And Shoulder Center Surpasses 2500 Outpatient Joint Replacement Procedures

There are many benefits to going home the same after joint replacement surgery and modern anesthetic and surgical techniques along with advanced pain management now allow this for a majority of patients. Starting in 2015, our practice began crafting our AVATAR rapid recovery program. Recognizing that all elements of the care process are critical to the end result, we strive to customize each patient’s treatment to suit their individual needs. A big part of this is patient education and navigation through the joint replacement journey.

Over the past 6 years, we have continued to refine this program. Year after year this has allowed a higher percentage of our patients to return home the same day – now close to 75-80% across all age categories. Recently, we surpassed the milestone of 2500 outpatient joint replacements, arguably the most in northern New England.

Successfully sending patients home the same day requires expertise and experience. Not every practice can do this well and this can lead to complications such as readmission to the hospital. Our practice metrics demonstrate an infection rate and readmission rate that are nearly 1/10th of national averages, reflecting the effectiveness of AVATAR.

The COVID pandemic has taught us that hospitals are for sick patients. Patients undergoing joint replacement surgery are not medically sick and there is now abundant published data demonstrating the safety of going home the same day as hip, knee, or shoulder replacement. If you are considering joint replacement, put our experience to work for you.
