Dr. Parsons recently traveled to Durham, NC to visit Restor3D, an orthopedic additive manufacturing company that specializes in the design and fabrication of custom orthopedic implants. Restor3D recently completed its acquisition of Conformis, Inc, which has been making patient-specific, custom total knee replacements for over 10 years. These implants replicate native patient anatomy in hopes of better recreating more normal function and feeling in the replaced knee. Dr. Parsons has been invited to serve on a design team including surgeons and engineers to develop the next generation of customized knee replacement implants. The goal is to combine advanced 3D printing techniques with improvements in image-based design to resurface the arthritic knee and restore patient-specific alignment of the knee. The design team includes surgeons from the Mayo Clinic, Vanderbilt University, Duke University and the Rothman Institute. The ultimate goal of this project is to bring superior joint replacement care to knee replacement including less pain, faster recovery and better outcomes. This project pairs with our AVATAR rapid recovery program which focuses on concierge navigation through the care process and a personalized joint replacement journey.
